Adopt an Art Nouveau gate

October 6, 2020

In the whole of a building, the gate it plays not only a functional role, but also a symbolic one. It is the threshold that marks the passage between the outer and the inner space, protected by the privacy of any home. The gate is an emblem of the house, and it can set the tone for the good taste that governs a building, or, on the contrary, sometimes it compromises.

In Oradea there are exceptional buildings of heritage value, already restored or in the process of restoration, signed by famous architects, but there are also many buildings from the vernacular background, of anonymous, domestic architecture, of which only disparate remains of a period unitary expressions.

Even if it is part of the protected historical area, this vernacular fund of the gates decorated in the Art Nouveau spirit or with Art Nouveau elements, most of the time in a precarious state of preservation, is drastically threatened with disappearance because it is not protected by the law, nor by knowledge or respect for any element - witness of the city's history.

In this sense, Art Nouveau Rotary Club assumes a duty of honor to propose a coherent program for the restoration of several valuable gates in Oradea that are decorated in the Art Nouveau spirit and to finance their restoration.

One of the most beautiful gates is that of the building on the street chestnut no. 27. This fully preserves the plastic composition conceived in the most authentic curvilinear Art Nouveau style.

Another remarkable gate is that of the building in the street AdyEndre no. 48, which preserves not only a beautiful lacy hardware in the skylight, but also the original doorknob.

Still on the street AdyEndre, at no. 37 A, another contribution can arouse interest precisely because it is on the verge of collapse. The skylight still retains fragments of curvilinear woodwork, even if the architectural context is eclectic. The restoration of this gate could be a convincing example of the importance of the restoration action that can spectacularly raise the value of a building.

Our undertaking on the specialized consulting side of the "Pavilion" NGO, from the composition of which I art historian Ramona Novicov, jewelry designer Ana Dobraş and professor of English and journalism Nicolaie Ardelean.

The restored gates can be transformed into Rotary brand jewels, accompanied by postcards-flyers with explanatory text and educational value. The NGO-ulisia also takes an important part in mediating the actions and artistic objects inspired by the gates chosen to be restored, all for the benefit of the Oradea community.

COST 5600 euro/ restored gate
