Over 400 high school students from Oradea learned about the risks and consequences of drug use from an anti-drug expert and from a young man in recovery
On January 29, we, the Oradea Art Nouveau Rotary Club, in partnership with the Phoenix Rotary Club and with the support of the Bihor County Inspectorate and the Oradea State Philharmonic, organized a meeting within the district project "Drugs - from fascination to addiction" with high school students from Oradea.
The event was meant to disseminate among young people the immense dangers with serious consequences related to drug use, and the meeting was attended by over 400 high school students from Oradea, together with teachers, from the "Mihai Eminescu" National College, the "Mihai Eminescu" National College Iosif Vulcan", "Iuliu Maniu" Greek-Catholic High School, "Partenie Cosma" Economic High School, Oradea Arts High School, "Vasile Voiculescu" Sanitary High School, "Traian Vuia" Technical College and "Mihai Viteazu" Technical College.
The presentation was supported by Prof. Dr. Cătălin Țone, anti-drug and anti-doping expert, author of the volume entitled "Marijuana, zborul spre iad", and one of the most competent voices in the field. The teenagers also had the opportunity to meet Sebi, a 25-year-old man who managed to give up drugs after almost losing his life. He talked about the environment, what addiction means, and how these experiences continue to affect him even after he's stopped using.
The youth were very interested and impressed by both Sebi's story and the presentation made, which included case studies from the book, short videos projected and excerpts from current legislation on drug possession and use. They asked questions and had relevant comments and observations, and at the end, they received copies of Cătalin Țone's book to remind them of the immense dangers of drug use.
"Beyond the legal, judicial and medical measures that the state, through its empowered institutions, takes and the punitive and treatment levers that it uses, I believe that these meetings with young people are equally important, in which, both the examples the positives of those who managed to give up consumption, as well as, unfortunately, the negatives, sometimes fatal, have a decisive role in convincing teenagers not to choose the path of addiction.
Prevention, knowing the terrible consequences in their full extent and honest dialogue are equally important tools, because, as can be seen, post factum, situations become much more complicated to solve and sometimes can take a turn towards a tragic outcome ", Prof. Dr. Cătălin Țone declared at the end of the event, at the same time thanking the Rotary organization, the Bucharest Phoenix Rotary clubs, Oradea Art Nouveau Rotary clubs, the Bihor County School Inspectorate and the Oradea State Philharmonic.
